Desk Sheets - What a Measured Run of Days Does to a Car Nobody Moves

Every sheet is about the car's side of the week rather than the traveller's. Each one takes a measurable thing that happens to a vehicle standing here, and each one ends at a reservation decision: length of stay, month, grade of stall, lead time.

01The eight sheets

02Why these and not travel advice

Because this desk is not qualified to write about travel and is qualified to write about vehicles standing still in this climate. The knowledge came from nine years of scheduling a commercial fleet in east Tucson, which is where you learn what a month of sun does to a dashboard and what a monsoon week does to a hood.

Each sheet ends where the reservation begins. That is the point: a sheet that tells you something interesting and leaves you with nothing to do with it is a magazine article, and this is a desk.

03What none of them claim

  • No sheet promises anything about the safety of a vehicle. Where a sheet says to ask about a lit, swept, regularly driven row, it says in the same paragraph that nobody can promise it, this desk included.
  • No sheet is mechanical advice. They describe what happens and what to ask, not what to do to a car.
  • No sheet names an operator or a lot. If a sheet describes a kind of lot, it is describing a kind.
  • No figure in a sheet is offered as a measurement. Where a number appears it is described as approximate and as a pattern.
